Last Minute Wedding Cakes

(Dont mind the first picture was taken during delivery, prior to final touches of adding missing pearls to the pear border)
In the middle of this past week I received an email asking for a quote on a wedding cake. The order was for the upcoming Sunday and was rather last minute (I like to have at least a bit over a week to plan a wedding cake but in this cake I only had few days) but after speaking to the wonderful woman who inquired about the cake I just HAD to take the job. Her name is Mary and she is the mother of the Bride and after chatting with her I felt as if I knew her for a lifetime. In fact, speaking to her made me miss my own Mother. If my mother was re-incarnated as a Southern Belle than she may come back as Mary! Anyway, we met, talked over the details and they were the perfect clients!!! They had a budget in mind, a general idea of what they were looking for, and they trusted me to use my artistic judgement in creating the final details...(Here is a tip to potential clients, trust your cake decorator, they will know what works best and what they are capable of, trust them!!! they want to make the most beautiful and delicious cake they can for you! B somewhat flexible!) Anyway, Mary and her daughter Melissa were a joy and I felt like we were meant to cross paths, I mean what is the coincidence that I received a last minute cancellation immediately before I receive Mary's inquiry....hmmm
Anyway, the request was for a simple white 2 tiered cake with fresh flowers and pink ribbon to make the wedding party colors. I had the bride choose the ribbon from samples I brought to her and that handled the wedding cake. Now to discuss the Grooms cake...her husband to be LOVES cheeseburgers, they are his FAVORITE food and so they asked if I could make a cheeseburger cake...I was jumping for joy on the inside since I have been waiting for the opportunity to make an oversize burger since I already made mini burgers.
I was excited and had to end our meeting to get started right away! (and to make it to class on time..but seriously, I could have spent all day with them!
The wedding cake was a 2-tiered white vanilla cake with fresh made strawberry butter cream filling. The cake was supposed to be decorated with fresh flowers however I only like to put fresh, organic flowers onto cakes to avoid pesticides and sprays used by farmers. I could not find the right colors in organic flowers so I made sugar flowers out of fondant and gum paste. I think that the bouquet looks just as beautiful as fresh flowers!

For the grooms cake I just went to work making the burger and buns of cake and creating the right colors for each component, the cheese and lettuce are fondant and the tomatoes are modelling chocolate...but you can't have a burger and no fries so I made some french fries that looked so real I had to really convince the guests and even the bride and groom that they were in fact dessert and not real french fries!

And I have to say...It is such a great pleasure to see how happy people are when they see these beautiful and sometimes peculiar cakes at their events...sometimes I just want to cry happy tears it feels so good to make people happy with something as silly and delicious as cake!
Thank you to Mary and Melissa for finding my advertisement and giving me the opportunity to make your wedding cake! And for trying to convince me to stay for lunch at the reception! I hope you and your guests enjoyed your wedding and I wish you a lifetime of burgers and happiness!
